Ambulatory Measurement of Dual-tasking Behaviour: Method and Preliminary Evaluation in Older Adults
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION Along with amnesia, decline of attention control of executive functions is among the earliest symptoms of dementia. Task performance under conditions of divided attention, or dual-tasking, are sensitive indicators. In particular, there is mounting evidence of poor performance of walking and talking simultaneously in patients with Alzheimer’s disease [1]. While the laboratory evidence has been growing, there is a lack of translational research examining dual-task behaviour in everyday life. The objectives of this study are to: 1) develop an ambulatory technique of capturing dual-tasking behaviour and, 2) characterize the frequency of naturally occurring dual-task events in older adults.

The effect of performing a dual-task on postural control and selective attention of older adults when stepping backward
[Purpose] The purpose of the study was to investigate the postural control and cognitive performance of older adults when stepping backward with and without a concurrent cognitive task. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty young adults and twenty-eight older adults (mean age=21.3 ± 1.2 and 72.2 ± 5.7 years, respectively) were recruited. Participants were asked to step backward and then maintain a sing...

Objectives: The present study aimsed to examine the reliability of forceplate parameters under both single and dual task conditions and in different levels of postural difficulty. Methods & Materials: The healthy elderly+65, were assessed with aone-week interval, with a random combination of three levels of postural difficulty (i.e., standing on a rigid surface with eyes open, standing on a ...
متن کاملStops walking when talking: a predictor of falls in older adults?
The objective of this study was to systematically review all published articles examining the relationship between the occurrence of falls and changes in gait and attention-demanding task performance whilst dual tasking amongst older adults. An English and French Medline and Cochrane library search ranging from 1997 to 2008 indexed under 'accidental falls', 'aged OR aged, 80 and over', 'dual ta...
متن کاملDual-tasking gait variability and cognition in late-life depression.
OBJECTIVES Studies have demonstrated an association between major depressive disorder (MDD) symptoms and fall risk in older adults, which may be at least partially mediated by executive functioning skills. There have also been observations of increased gait variability associated with fall risk and disease. This preliminary study first sought to understand whether gait variability in the contex...
متن کاملAge-related changes in posture control are differentially affected by postural and cognitive task complexity.
The simple postural task of quiet standing, which requires minimal attentional resources, is generally paired with cognitive activity. Competition for attentional resources is a consequence of simultaneously performing balance tasks and cognitive tasks, and impairment of attentional resource allocation with aging leads to increased risks of fall. We investigated age-related changes in posture c...
